Unit 4 Reflection

Quinn Dozier

Period 5
Unit 4 Reflection
This unit was all about the Integumentary system and the Immune system. These systems defend our bodies from invaders, such as bacteria and viruses. Essential understandings include how important the skin is, how different systems work together to keep the body healthy, how there are many different methods the body uses to maintain healthy, and what cancer is. This unit was slightly different than previous units. The learning process was mainly through notes and readings. There weren't as many labs or demonstrations. Also, we had the debates going on at the same time. The trials weren't as distracting or time consuming as i thought they would be, so we were still able to focus on learning about defending the body. I like when we do labs but I also understand that it's sort of difficult to perform a lab in this unit.
I definitely learned a lot of new things about the body. I knew the skin was important obviously, but there's so much more that it does that I never knew. And with the immune system I knew it fought off germs, but I didn't know how it attacked and how important it is.
I liked the debates a lot and were definitely different than how we debate in history class. In there it is basically an organized argument. But the debates we did for this class were much more structured and peaceful, as well as interesting topics where there wasn't a clear answer. I am curious if changes will happen to our current organ system.

Wellness Day Reflection

Wellness Day Reflection

Niko and I chose this topic because it was something we both already do and already are knowledgable about. We figured that it would be something new to teach the students but also had a simple activity that they could understand easily. Even though I already lift a lot, I definitely learned some new things during this project. Lifting can actually increase your dopamine and serotonin levels, as well as improve your relaxation and focus. I already knew how it helped your muscles but I did not know about these psychological benefits. Also learned that the gold medal female lifter is from the United States. Lifting can improve your health by strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility, strengthening core, and strengthening your bones, along with the psychological benefits already listed. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give myself an 8 because we had a solid project but it was very short.

Blood Pressure Lab Analysis

Blood Pressure Lab
1.) The systole is the point where the heart is contracting so it is pumping blood through our blood vessels. Diastole is the relaxation point where the heart stops contracting.
2.) To measure heart rate we used our fingers to feel our veins. To help us hear better we can use a stethoscope. To measure blood pressure we used a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope.
3.) Sometimes a pulse can be too faint to feel with just our thumb. Also we can miscount.
4.) First you strap the cuff on your bicep with the cords going down. Then put the stethoscope under the cuff right above your elbow. Push the pump until the meter goes to about 150 then slowly release the valve. When you start to hear your heartbeat, that's the systole number. When you can't hear the heartbeat anymore, that's the diastole number.

Heart Chalk Walk

Blood starts in the inferior vena cava. It travels through the right atrium, to the right ventricle, then exits to go to the lungs. Blood enters again at the pulmonary vein and goes to the left atrium, followed by the left ventricle, then through the aorta and out to the body.

Health Reflection

Health Reflection
Health is the overall wellbeing of one's physical and mental self. I feel as though I am relatively healthy, but could definitely improve. I work out plenty and talk with lots of friends, but my diet and sleep schedule could certainly get better. I get stressed sometimes, but can usually manage it. However, I think stress is one of the biggest issues here at Saratoga High. Students are generally fit and somewhat nutritious, but the stress can be so great that it even affects our sleep or social abilities. I think just continuing to bring awareness to it will help. The themes were that health isn't just eating right and exercising, it is actually a system of five different components that all have to balance each other; sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress, and social interaction. I learned a lot this unit. The average teenager should be getting about nine hours of sleep a night, in our society we eat way too many carbs, and hanging out with friends and relaxing is just as important as cardio. I still get some of all the different hormones mixed up and what they do. Next unit I will make sure to not miss anything when we are writing down notes. A real world application could be how when we are sleep deprived we can feel drowsy or cloudy. I definitely frequently experience so I definitely need to get more sleep. Some of my goals are to try and get at least eight hours of sleep per night, and eventually move up to nine. I can do this by not procrastinating on my homework and not using my phone and computer in bed. I also am going to cut out soda from my diet. I've done this before so it shouldn't be challenging.

Sleep Diary

This unit was very interesting. In was pretty eye opening to learn how crucial sleep is to our health, and how diminishing it can be if we don't get enough. I learned that teenagers need to be getting at least 9 hours of sleep a day to maximize their potential and I typically only get about 7 hours and 15 minutes every night. It was also interesting to learn about the different stages of sleep such as REM. I will definitely try to go to bed early more or try to incorporate naps into my day which can be very helpful.

Nutrition Analysis

Nutrition Analysis

This was a very interesting report. I enjoyed how we are looking at our own real lives instead of just looking at different foods and determining what is healthy and what isn't. This makes it much more relatable and interesting when we do the report. I learned a lot from this as well. There were many foods, especially from restaurants, that were way over calories and fat than what I expected. It is really eye opening and definitely makes you think twice before you order your favorite meal. The main thing I took away from this is that, especially because I exercise so frequently, I need to be consuming more calories. However I need to be eating the right kinds of calories, ones full of varying nutrients. I also eat very sodium dense foods, so adding more fruits and vegetables to my diet might be a good way to increase my vitamin intake while at the same time not going overboard on the salt. I think something that can significantly improve my eating habits is cooking at home opposed to eating out. You have no control what goes into your food at a restaurant, and usually non-healthy ingredients are added in an attempt to improve taste. Another thing would be to stay away from processed foods, as natural or organic ingredients are much healthier options.

Health Collage

My strongest pillars are probably Exercise and Social. I definitely need to work on my sleep level. I am interested in learning how sleep can affect your body.

Endothelial Cells

Endothelial Cells

Endothelial cells form a thin layer of simple squamous epithelial cells. They are located on the inner lining of Cardiovascular and Lymphatic systems. It has all the same organelles as a typical eukaryotic cell. The function of endothelial cells is to act as a barrier between fluids and organs inside the body. They can also help regulate blood pressure.

Hana the Banana

Anterior: hole 3 cm superior from bottom, 1 cm left medial. Left ear cut off 0.2 cm lateral to left eye. Second hole 4 cm inferior from right eye. 6 puncture wounds.

Posterior: puncture wound 4 cm superior from bottom. Laceration 5 cm superior to puncture wound. Second laceration 5 1/2 cm superior and lateral right to puncture wound.

Sagittal Right: laceration 6 cm inferior to top.

Sagittal Left: no trauma shown.

Cause of Death: Hana lived a healthy lifestyle until it was decided her body needed to be donated by science by Mr. Orre. He first delivered several lacerations with a scalpel and even cut off her left ear and right arm, until delivering the fatal blows, two stab wounds clean through the torso via nail.
